Istanbul, formerly known as Constantinople, is Turkey's economic, cultural, transportation center, the world famous tourist resort, one of the bustling international metropolis, located in the eastern end of the Balkan Peninsula, the Bosphorus Strait south of the west Bank, the entrance to the Black Sea, for the Eurasian traffic, strategic position is extremely important. With an area of 5343 square kilometers, the urban area has expanded to the north of the Golden Horn Bay, and Yuskudar on the eastern bank of the Bosphorus has also been included in the urban area, becoming a modern city across Europe and Asia. The name of Istanbul existed for at least a hundred years before the conquest of the Ottoman Empire. For example, in 1403, the Spanish king sent his envoy to meet Timur the Great and passed through Constantinople. It was mentioned in his memoirs that the Greeks also called this place Istanbul, but the Western countries thought that the Ottoman Empire was the invaders here, so they still insisted on calling this place Constantinople. When the Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923, Istanbul became the official name of the international community. Istanbul was elected European Capital of Culture in 2010 and European Capital of Sports in 2012. The city's historic quarter was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985; In November 2018, the World City Ranking was released, and Istanbul entered the ranks of the world's first-tier cities.
